Week 10: Equitable Education & Assistive Technology

This week, we had a guest speaker named Chantelle Morvay-Adams (from BCEdAccess), come in and talk to us about equity in the classroom. I believe she really touched a lot of us, in sharing her personal experience with her son who has some learning disabilities, and the struggles they have been through as a family. She asked us some very important discussion questions and sent us off into groups for the majority of the class to share our ideas and opinions on how we might make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. She asked how technology might aid students with disabilities in the classroom, and some very interesting and informative ideas came up such as the use of special instruments in music class, online tools and resources, and even the use of headphones or special “sensory corners” for students to take a break and allow themselves to settle down. I really loved this class as I felt as though I’d learned a lot from Chantelle and my fellow classmates.
